Fiancée

If you are a U.S. citizen and not quite yet married yet, you also have the advantage of applying for a specific visa that allows you to bring your fiancé(e) to the United States first before marrying. This is an attractive option for many who want to have a trial period with their fiancé(e) being present in the United States first, or who would rather have their wedding or civil ceremony in the U.S., or who simply do not have the option or resources to travel abroad to get married first before applying for their spouse’s green card.

There are some important things to remember with this type of visa, however. Once your fiancé(e) enters the United States, you have only 90 days to obtain a marriage license. Additionally, the immigration laws typically require that you have at least met your fiancé(e) once within the two years preceding the filing of the application, unless you fall within one of the narrow exemptions of this requirement.

Once you have married your fiancé(e), you must file an adjustment of application to adjust their status to a permanent resident.
